SBS 2012 R2 Essentials Error : ‘Unable to find a default server with Active Directory Web Services running.’

This week I had to migrate a customer from SBS 2008 to SBS Essentials 2012 R2.

During the migration method from Microsoft TechNet blog, I had to transfer the FSMO roles to the new domain controller, by using the command Move-ADDirectoryServerOperationMasterRole.

I received the error :
‘Unable to find a default server with Active Directory Web Services running.’

Move-ADDirectoryServerOperationMasterRole –Identity adm11 0,1,2,3,4

Solution 1 :

Use the –server parameter to define what server to use the cmmand, because the old server doesn’t have the Active Directory Web Services installed.

Move-ADDirectoryServerOperationMasterRole –Identity adm11 –server adm11 0,1,2,3,4

Solution 2 :

Install the Active Directory Management Gateway Service (Active Directory Web Service for Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008) on the old server.
